Palestinian President Yasser Arafat will make a two-day visit to Japan this week to brief Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori on the status of Middle East peace talks, reported AFP, quoting Foreign Minister Yohei Kono.

Arafat is scheduled to arrive in Tokyo on Thursday to meet Mori and the foreign minister in the wake of last month's failed Camp David summit in the United States, Kono said.

"The aim of his visit is to convey his evaluation and impression to us about the Camp David summit," he told a news conference.

"We hope to exchange views over ways to proceed with the peace talks."

Arafat has visited 19 capitals in three weeks to drum up support for his pledge to declare a Palestinian state on September 13th and for Palestinian sovereignty over east Jerusalem.

Earlier Tuesday he arrived in Vietnam as part of his tour that would also include Indonesia, said Reuters.

The President would brief Vietnam on the recent Middle East peace talks and his plan to declare an independent state on September 13th, said the agency.

He said the visit would last only a few hours, said an official – Albawaba.com
