Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat held talks Saturday with Oman's Sultan Qaboos on the situation in the Palestinian territories and the last-ditch US peace plan, the ONA news agency said.
Arafat, accompanied by top adviser Nabil Abu Rudeina and Palestine Liberation Organization number two Mahmud Abbas, informed Sultan Qaboos "of the situation in the occupied territories and the efforts deployed to save the peace process," ONA said.
Sultan Qaboos offered Arafat "his opinions and advice on the ways of advancing the peace process with a view to achieving peace and stability in the region," the agency said.
Israeli and Palestinian officials have both said an accord is possible before US President Bill Clinton leaves office on January 20, although the two sides remain sharply divided over key issues.
Oman in 1996 became the first Gulf Arab monarchy to open a commercial bureau in Israel. Qaboos closed the office in October to protest Israel's bloody crackdown on Palestinian rioters -- MUSCAT (AFP)
