Ankara on Thursday condemned a violent attack on a Turkish diplomat serving in Bulgaria and urged Sofia to step up security for Turkish envoys.
Turkey's deputy consul in the Black Sea city of Burgas and his wife were attacked by three men Sunday, while waiting for help after suffering a car accident on a road near Sliven town, a foreign ministry statement said.
The envoy, Mehmet Koza, sustained a serious head injury, it said, adding that the Turkish diplomatic couple was also robbed in the incident.
"We have condemned this ugly attack and expressed our regret over it in a note to the Bulgarian foreign ministry," the statement said.
"We expect the Bulgarian authorities to apprehend as soon as possible the perpetrators, to hand them over to justice and take the necessary measures to prevent the repetition of such incidents," it added.
After receiving medical treatment in Sliven, Koza was transferred to a hospital in the Turkish city of Edirne, near the Bulgarian border – ANKARA (AFP)
