ALBAWABA - The search volume among Egyptians on Google has surged in the past few hours for the word 'Sinai' after social media users shared numerous posts regarding the deletion of the name of the Sinai Peninsula from Google Maps.

A wave of controversy has emerged in Egypt, with social media buzzing about Google's handling of the Sinai Peninsula on its map searches.

In response to these claims, technology consultant Islam Ghanem shed light on Google's policies. He explained that Google generally lists the names of cities on its maps, rather than major regions or geographical areas. For instance, you won't find "Upper Egypt" on their maps. Instead, when you zoom in on Egypt's map, you'll see the capital and the cities within the country, in line with Google's usual practice.

Furthermore, Google typically does not include the names of governorates or large regions on its maps. Instead, their focus primarily centers on city names.

It's important to note that Google, as a company headquartered in the United States, adheres to American policies and laws, but it also strives to remain impartial with respect to people worldwide.

One key facet of Google's approach is the policy of appeasement, which is designed to prevent angering any population across the globe. Therefore, under this policy, Google cannot remove Sinai from its maps, even in response to disputes or other claims.

In summary, Google has not removed the name of the Sinai Peninsula from its maps. Instead, it has highlighted the names of cities within the Sinai region, such as the capital of North Sinai, El Arish, and the capital of South Sinai, El Tor.
