Algerian authorities on Wednesday implicitly barred a planned demonstration in support of the Palestinians by issuing a "reminder" that all marches are banned in the country for security reasons.
A communiqué published by the state news agency APS made no reference to the plan for a demonstration on Thursday, but "reminded" citizens that "popular marches are not permitted for reasons of public order."
The interior ministry statement added, however, that "meetings in enclosed and accessible places may be organized" once permission is obtained from the authorities.
Islamist parties including the Movement for Loyalty and Justice, which is not officially recognized, the National Reform Movement and the Workers' Party had called the demonstration.
On Monday, about 3,000 people gathered at an Algiers sports stadium for a rally in support of the Palestinians called by two other Islamist parties, the Movement of a Peaceful Society and Ennahda (Renaissance) - ALGIERS (AFP)
