Aggreko UK plc, listed on the London Stock Exchange and global leader in providing temporary power generation and temperature control services, today announced that the 50MW/11kV & 33kV temporary power station installed in Kampala, Uganda has been completed and became fully operational on 28th May, ahead of the contracted date.

Commenting on the award of the contract from its headquarters in Scotland, Aggreko Chief Executive, Rupert Soames, said: “As the worlds’ leading power generation rental company, we have had extensive experience of delivering short term power solutions for utilities around the world. Over the past five years, Aggreko has provided support for utility authorities in Nigeria, Kenya, and more recently, Gabon.

“As our first major project in Uganda, this contract complements our strategy of international business expansion. Providing power to supplement the electricity grid in Kampala will assist the economic and industrial development of Uganda; ‘The Pearl of Africa’.’’ Mr Soames added.

The power package was mobilised from the Aggreko base in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and installed at the Lugogo substation. Derek Shepherd, Aggreko Managing Director, explained that the power package had been designed to match the requirements of the local infrastructure. “The 50MW power station was comprised of a 10MW and a 40MW package, with electricity supplied at both 11kV and 33kV,” he said.

In its first contract with the Ugandan Electricity Transmission Company Limited, the Aggreko power station will continue operation for a term of three years and will be used to supplement the grid supply and alleviate the daily load shedding experienced in the region.

Peak demand for power is significantly greater than the current generating capacity. The Aggreko power plant will help supplement the grid supply until a permanent solution is available.
