ALBAWABA- Russia unleashed one of its heaviest bombardments on Ukraine’s capital in months, firing hundreds of drones and missiles at Kyiv overnight, Ukrainian officials said on Thursday.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that eight people, including two children, were killed, and at least 25 others injured when missiles and drones struck residential buildings and civilian infrastructure in the early hours of August 28, 2025.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on X following the latest Russian bombardment of Kyiv, “Right now in Kyiv, first responders are clearing the rubble of an ordinary residential building after a Russian strike. Another massive attack against our cities and communities. Killings again,” Zelensky wrote. He extended condolences to the families of the victims, warning that people may still be trapped under the debris.
The president condemned the assault as Russia’s response to global appeals for diplomacy, saying Moscow had chosen “ballistics instead of the negotiating table” and continues to kill because it “does not fear the consequences.” He criticized what he described as international complacency: “At least part of the world turns a blind eye to murdered children and seeks excuses for Putin.”
Zelensky specifically called for reactions from China and Hungary, arguing that the death of children should stir stronger responses than “silence or excuses.” China has repeatedly urged restraint and a ceasefire, while Hungary has opposed tougher EU sanctions on Russia.
He also renewed calls for “new, tough sanctions against Russia”, stressing that opportunities for diplomacy had been squandered. “Russia must feel accountable for every strike, for every day of this war. Eternal memory to all victims of Russia!” Zelensky concluded.
The Interior Ministry earlier reported four deaths but later revised the toll upward as rescue efforts continued. Emergency services battled widespread fires and searched for survivors trapped under rubble across several districts of Kyiv.
Zelenskyy condemned the strikes as a deliberate escalation, calling on the international community to impose tougher sanctions against Russia. “Every missile that hits our cities is proof that more pressure is needed,” he said.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 629 drones and missiles overnight, with air defenses intercepting many but not all. Social media videos and eyewitness accounts showed high-rise apartments ablaze, collapsed buildings, and fire crews evacuating families.
The sttack followed a wave of Russian strikes across Ukraine on August 27 that killed at least three people and knocked out power for more than 100,000 households, underscoring the intensifying scale of Moscow’s aerial campaign.
