Nearly 6,000 Lebanese and Palestinians marched through the streets of this southern Lebanese town Friday, shouting for the Palestinians of the Intifada, or uprising, to take up arms against Israelis.
"Throw away the olive branch, and carry arms," marchers shouted while unfurling Lebanese and Palestinian national flags.
Lebanese and Palestinian sports, workers and cultural associations organized the event to honor the thirteenth anniversary of the start of the Palestinian territories' first Intifada (1987-1993).
Ali Khalil and Ali Khrayss, Lebanese parliamentary members from Tyre, led the marchers through the streets. Many protestors came from the three Palestinian refugee camps around Tyre.
The protestors carried banners which read: "The Intifada is the way to recover stolen Palestine"; "It must not be at any price to recognize the state of Israel..."
