ALBAWABA - A mass shooting occurred overnight at Virginia State University overnight, leaving one dead and five injured.
The shooter, Camron Harris, was found hiding in a dorm closet at the university; four out of the five injured aged between 17 and 23 were also not students, only one of those injured was a student, a 20-year-old who has since been released from the hospital, Chesterfield County Police said in a statement.
Police have no information on a possible motive for the shooting, Eight felony warrants were obtained by the police for Harris, including for malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The shooting occurred just after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, prompting a campus lockdown and coming as students were getting ready for the new school year.
Earlier, the university said that police were looking for multiple suspects, the police, however, have not provided any information regarding this claim, only saying that they did not believe there was an immediate threat to the campus community, and that the campus lockdown had been lifted.
"We recognize the concern this incident has caused among our students, parents, alumni, friends, and the broader VSU community," the university's statement said. "The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority."
Arthur Fridrich, former university director who lives near the campus said that a shooting like this just as students return for classes is heartbreaking for the community, he continued:
"To start a new year with this event is very tragic. It casts a shadow in the minds of all students, and for some it will be difficult to rid their minds of this term," Fridrich said. "For those that were shot, my heart bleeds. I hope that they all mend and somehow do not let this event define their lives."
