Some 170 people were presumed dead after a fire broke out Saturday on a funicular train leading to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, a major tourist site 350 kilometers (220 miles) west of Vienna, the Salzburg provincial governor said.
Only eight passengers survived the blaze, the official told Austria's APA news agency.
The fire broke out inside the train's only carriage at 9:30am (0830GMT) and speculation on the cause of the blaze was initially focusing on a technical malfunction – VIENNA (AFP)
