At least 17 people died Saturday and eight were injured after a vehicle plunged into a well in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, police said.
Police said the accident occurred early Saturday near the town of Valliyur in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district.
"The van was carrying tourists to Kanyakumari," a police official said, referring to a popular destination on India's southern tip.
"The driver lost control of the vehicle. He could have been sleepy as he was driving throughout the night," he said.
Police said the driver ran over a boy before veering towards a large well, 15-meter (50-feet) deep, on the side of the road.
"The van smashed through a wall surrounding the well and fell inside," he said. “The eight survivors managed to jump out before that” -- NEW DELHI (AFP)
