Memac Ogilvy’s hour for life

As a symbolic gesture to show their support and appreciation to Earth, Memac Ogilvy multinational advertising and PR agency in Egypt switched off all non-essential electric appliances in the office building for one whole hour during the working week. This Earth hour was celebrated in the office garden, as all the agency employees enjoyed natures beauty and shared ideas on how further preservation of the Earth can be accomplished in the office. The aim of the participation was simply because the future of the generations to come depends on it. 

The reason all Egyptians should save energy, by using electricity wisely is because of the diminishing resources used to generate it. The main source of electricity in Egypt is natural gas & oil accounting for 70% of electricity source to Egypt. Oil production in Egypt has declined since the country’s 1996 peak by almost 30% while the consumption has increased by 37%, leading to the stop of oil exports from Egypt in order to keep up with the demand of the increasing population. The drop of oil production in Egypt will affect refining and chemical companies, making it difficult to increase revenues from these sources. The Suez Canal is one of Egypt’s sources of revenues, but with world oil exports down, revenues from it are likely dropping as well. It is a vicious cycle that can be avoided by the conscious and responsible consumption of electricity.

“Memac Ogilvy’s participation will not stop when the lights come back on; we have vowed to take part in different Earth preservation activities. The Egypt team has recently saved 105 trees, by recycling all newspapers and unwanted documents in the building. This was only a step forward towards a more environment conscious agency.”  Said Tarek Lasheen, PR Director Memac Ogilvy Egypt.   

Earth week, the New Year for the environment occurs April 17 to 23 of each year, intended in raising awareness of global issues, particularly in regard to our overuse of non-renewable resources, resultant light and air pollution. Earth week is embraced by global communities, transcending race, culture, age and economics as individuals and associations take part in the pursuit of a cleaner and safer planet.
