US Middle East envoy George Mitchell is expected to travel to Syria later this week for talks with President Bashar al-Assad over renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, a US official said Tuesday. According to AFP, Mitchell will have "consultations" with the Syrian leader after participating in negotiations in Egypt, Israel and the West Bank.
An official at the US embassy in Damascus said the meeting would be held on Thursday morning.
On Tuesday, Mitchell joined US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.
