The Syrian media welcomed today the return of Egypt into the Arab arena, criticizing the foreign policy adopted by the Mubarak regime. However, the press stopped short of mentioning the similarities to Egypt, i.e. dictatorship and big role for the intelligence services in protectingthe regime.
Al Thawra newspaper published an editorial entitled "Egypt writes history," "Egypt today is not the same Egypt of yesterday. Now Egypt will introduce its true face and restore its regional and Arab sources. It will open the gates after they were closed for decades … it will to redraw the map of the region."
In the same newspaper, a commentary entitled "Lessons from faked normalization " said the Israeli concerns about the normalization will be greater," after "this entity was assured by the Egyptian side throughout the past three decades."
It noted that Israel "forgot or tend to forget that the Egyptian people reject the Camp David Peace Accord (...) ,did not accept it and refused to participate in the process of normalization."
It added that the peace deal "handcuffed Egypt and constrained its political, military and economic abilities. It dominated its decisions and exited it the vanguard of Arab nationalism."
For its part, Tishrin newspaper wrote under the title "Egypt is back" that the revolution in Egypt, is "a major turning point in the life of the nation not only in Egypt but in the whole Arab nation (...) because the people of Egypt who ousted the Camp David regime and the leader who imposed siege on Gaza and its resistance fighters will be held accountable in courts"
"The Egyptian Revolution proved that Egypt, which was hijacked from us for more than 35 years, can not abandon its national identity and its Arab character (...) no one can be restricted to no end of humiliation and comply with agreements."
