The Syria army shelled Wednesday the city of Homs in central Syria, a human rights activist said. "Shelling and automatic gunfire could be heard early Wednesday in the neighbourhood of Bab Amr and in nearby villages, Mashada, Jobar and Sultanya," Najati Tayara was quoted as saying by AFP.

Ccording to him, the villages, with a combined population of about 100,000 inhabitants have been the target of a security operation since Monday. The Syrian army operated in the agricultural area searching for weapons and spreading fear among the population, he said.

He added that 50 tanks had rolled into the Homs' Sittin district on Wednesday.

On its part, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) quoted a military source as saying that army units and security forces continue to prosecute, what he called "the remnants of armed terrorist groups" in Homs. The agency added that security forces arrested on Tuesday, dozens of "wanted" men and seized a huge quantity of arms and ammunition that "terrorist groups used to attack the citizens."
