Two people have been killed in a bombing in southern Cairo, an interior ministry source told state news agency MENA.
The dead are likely to be the bombers, the source added.
The explosion took place on Thursday morning in the Al-Tebeen area of Helwan.
An automatic rifle and a pistol were found next to the severely distorted bodies, suggesting they might have been carrying the bomb, the source said.
Egypt has been rocked by a wave of militant violence since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last summer following massive protests against him.
According to a government tally, approximately 500 police and soldiers have been since been killed in shootings and bombings that have become commonplace.
Militant fighters say their campaign is in retaliation for a crackdown on Islamist supporters of former president Mohamed Morsi that has seen hundreds killed and thousands thrown behind bars since his removal last July.
On Monday, gunmen killed three policemen at Cairo's Al-Azhar University.
The violence is expected to mount three days ahead of a presidential vote that former army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi is expected to win.
