Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said that the crisis faced by his country is nearing the end. Quoted Wednesday by a Lebanese newspaper Assad added that internal errors have accumulated and contributed to creation of the current situation, which was exploited by the media to incite against his regime.
Assad was speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the Meidan district of Damascus on Tuesday. Its members included doctors, businessmen and ordinary citizens.
The newspaper quoted businessman Issam Matouk as saying: "The meeting lasted 3 hours and was dedicated to discuss the current issues. President Assad focused on internal affairs and efforts to find appropriate methods to move the economy forward." According to Matouk, Assad said the crisis was at its final stages.
Matouk said that "many of the participants focused on the role of the security services in recent events, and there was a consensus that this role must limited to the collection of information and not to interfere in the work of other state bodies. The participants raised topics related to corruption, particularly in the customs and the judiciary sectors, and the need to repair them."
