With hate crimes against Muslims reportedly reaching new heights since Donald Trump’s election, Muslim Americans are surely unsettled by the news over who Trump has assigned as his chief strategist. Steve Bannon, a man accused of being a white supremacist, and who published a headline on his far-right newspaper claiming, “Political correctness protects Muslim rape culture," will be by Trump’s side in the White House.

Given Trump’s repeated call to ban Muslims from entering the United States, Bannon’s appointment does not come as much of a surprise. The executive chairman of Breibart News has has been accused of racism, anti-Semitism and misogyny and of sharing an ideology with far-right parties such as the French National Front.

Before becoming Trump’s chief strategist, Bannon hosted a daily radio show where many of his guests, who he describes as “leading experts” and “political thinkers,”  were provided a platform to express extremist, islamophobic views.

One of Bannon's guests on the show, the high-profile Trump surrogate Roger Stone, warned of a future America "where hordes of Islamic madmen are raping, killing, pillaging, defecating in public fountains, harassing private citizens, elderly people—that's what's coming."

Many have taken to Twitter to condemn the appointment of Bannon, who is seen as a threat, not only to Muslims, but to all minorities.

However, not all were disappointed. "I think that's excellent," former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke told CNN's KFile. "I think that anyone that helps complete the program and the policies that President-elect Trump has developed during the campaign is a very good thing.”
