The irony of an ‘Allahu Akhbar’ screaming bank robber is riling Saudis on Twitter

Here's the headline— a heavily armed man charges into a bank in Saudi Arabia shouting "Allahu Akhar."

Maybe it sounds like the beginning of another suicide attack in the Gulf country, but it's actually the beginning of a failed bank robbery, according to Arabic media reports. See the disconnect? Saudis do, and it's making for a pretty hefty — sort of dark —Twitter laugh. 

Draped in a traditional Arabic dishdash and machine gun, the man reportedly stormed a bank in Saudi's Jazan region Tuesday, screaming the mantra and demanding money from the branch's teller.

Authorites showed up to apprehend the gunman shortly afterward, but not before he killed the bank manager and held several customers hostage.

In English, "Allahu Akhbar" translates to "God is Great," and it's one of the most commonly used Islamic phrases out there. Worshippers say it during daily prayer and muezzins say it before the mosque call. It's a lot like Christians saying "Oh my god" or "Praise Jesus."

It's also unfortuntely become one of the many things about Islam hijacked by Daesh (ISIS) and other extremnist groups, so the only time the phrase really makes headlines is when something terrible happens right after it.

Even the authorities that showed up to the bank scene Tuesday feared the same — police forces instructed the assailant to surrender in his underwear to make sure he didn't have an explosive belt on.

But the real irony of this bizarre tale lies within another Islamic doctrine—the fact that stealing is haram.
