Twitter has been overrun with striking pictures as up to 16,000 people flee East Aleppo in the face of rapid government advances into the rebel-held area.

Most fled on foot, while others were lucky enough to be evacuated by bus. They are heading mostly to camps in government-held or Kudish areas.

United Nations: 16 thousand people have been displaced in Aleppo after the fighting in recent days.

An account belonging to “the [Muslim] Brotherhood in Syria” posted this image:

One newspaper even had “the Great Displacement” as its headline:

#Aleppo between "falling" and "liberation" and #TheGreatDisplacement, #Threatening to #ChangeTheCourseOfWar

There are widely reported to be up to 250,000 civilians living in East Aleppo, so these haunting photos are likely only the beginning of more to come as forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad move deeper into the opposition stronghold.
