Pharrell Williams has come to the defense of the Iranian youths arrested for posting their own version of his smash hit single "Happy."
The US singer and producer said that everyone should be able to celebrate their joy, including those Iranian youngsters.
Iran arrested the young women appearing in the video for breaching Iranian law by dancing, appearing with heads uncovered in public.
The Islamic country also sees the video as promoting the spread of Western culture.
Williams says he has "the utmost respect for people's religious views" and doesn't know much about Iranian law, reported AP.
He did however add: "The present is a gift, and if you just want to celebrate your happiness, you should be allowed to do that."
Speaking at an exhibit opening in Paris Monday, he said, "They are just dancing."
The "Happy" craze took the world by storm since the song's release in November 2013.
