ALBAWABA - Almost a year after a spectacular falling out between President Donald Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk, the pair appear to be inching closer together, united by common political and economic objectives.
Musk is planning to spend at least $100 million to support Republicans in the November midterm elections, The Wall Street Journal reported, capping a months-long campaign to mend his relationship with Trump.
Signs of Reconciling
A hint of the improved friendship was Musk’s trip to China in May, where he joined Trump’s official group in Beijing after months of public animosity.
During the trip, Trump reportedly talked with Musk about a recent video of a space flight, asked about one of his children and listened as Musk described intentions to open new manufacturing plants in the United States.
Musk also told White House aides he had liked being involved in Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, signifying his slow reentry into the political sphere after distancing himself following the fallout.
From Alliance to Public Spat
The Trump-Musk alliance first boomed following Trump’s 2024 presidential victory. Musk took on a top advising role in the administration, spearheading the charge on shrinking the size of the federal government thru the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.
But eventually, clashes over Musk’s managerial style and his sway over government agencies put a strain on the relationship.
The row reached a climax in June 2025, when months of private disagreements spilled out into a public social media battle. Musk publicly challenged Trump, and the president responded by threatening to cancel federal contracts handed to Musk’s firms, driving the once-close partnership to the brink of disintegration.
Behind the Scenes of Mediation
The reunion came after almost a year of behind-the-scenes efforts by senior Trump advisers and mutual allies, the article said.
It involved private conversations, invitations to Mar-a-Lago and the White House and mediation by conservative activist Charlie Kirk before his death. His funeral service was said to be a turning moment that got the two men speaking again.
Trump and Musk have had regular contacts since then, talking about subjects including artificial intelligence, China and global politics.
Political and Business Interests Merge
The revitalized alliance has also benefited from multiple political moves in Musk’s favor.
This included reappointing Trump’s close Musk buddy Jared Isaacman to oversee NASA, after the president had previously pulled his nomination at the height of their spat.
The administration also said it moved one of Trump’s officials who argued with Musk to a diplomatic job outside Washington, reports say.
At the same time both sides are still bound together by practical interests. SpaceX, owned by Musk, relies significantly on huge U.S. government military and space contracts, and the administration counts on the company’s capabilities for critical national security and space missions.
That $100 million political investment
One of Musk’s recent political promises is to put up at least $100 million to get Republican voters out to vote ahead of the midterms.
The funds might be funneled thru America PAC, the political group Musk established to support Trump and Republican candidates in the 2024 election, along with MAGA Inc., which reportedly has over $400 million on hand.
Even as he becomes more politically involved, Musk has indicated he doesn’t plan to take as active a political role as he did in the last election cycle, conceding that he had gotten “too involved in politics” and “gone too far” in that position.
A Strategic Partnership, Not a Friendship
According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump and Musk have resumed communication, although neither anticipates a complete restoration of their personal connection.
Instead, the renewal of their connection seems to be built mostly on shared interests: Trump gets Musk's financial muscle and political support; Musk keeps strong economic ties to the U.S. government thru enterprises like SpaceX.
The reconciliation is not a return to a close relationship, but the re-building of a strategic political and financial alliance between two powerful people who still count on each other.
