Sabah al-Jazaeri wins best actress as Oran Arab Film Festival concludes in Algeria

Syrian actress Sabah al-Jazaeri won the Best Actress Award at Oran Arab Film Festival 2015 which was concluded on Friday evening.

Al-Jazaeri won the award, which she dedicated to Syria, for her role in the movie “The Mother” by director Basil al-Khatib.

The Mother tells the story of a simple family and how their lives were turned upside down due to the crisis in Syria, with emphasis on motherhood and the emotions and sentiments associated with it. In addition to Al-Jazaeri, the movie stars Sulaf Fawakherji, Dima Qandalaft, and Noura Rahhal.

The movie is the second part of a trilogy by al-Khatib on Syrian women and war. The first movie in the trilogy was Mariam and will be concluded with Syrians: People of the Sun.

In addition to The Mother, Syrian movie Four by Paradise Time by director Mohammad Abdelaziz competed in the feature-length film category in the festival, in addition to “Smile, You Are Dying” by director Wasim al-Sayyed which competed in the short film category.

Sabah Jazaeri and actress Sulaf Fawakherji delivered the festival guests’ speech at the closing ceremony of the festival.

Sabah al-Jazaeri was born in Damascus, and took up acting in 1973, becoming one of the pioneers of Syrian drama. She performed in numerous TV series, plays, and films, earning her many awards, including Best Actress at the Muscat International Film Festival in 2014 for her role in Mariam.
