The Egyptian censors have at last given the green light to screening the film Kawkab Al Sharq (Um Kulthoum) directed by Mohammed Fadel and starring Fardous Abdel Hamid, according to the Arabic daily Al Massaa.

The censors said in their report that the film explores very private aspects in the life of the late Egyptian singer Um Kulthoum including her romantic relations with both Sharif Pasha Al Masri, composer Mahmoud Al Sharif and Poet Ahmed Rami in addition to her marriage to Hassan Al Hifnawi.

The film includes scenes for the late artist crying at the base of the pyramid when Rami did not fulfill his appointment with her in addition to the scenes when she was searching for him on the front seats at her concerts.

The censors also rejected Um Kulthoum’s scene wearing short and playing tennis at her favorite summer resort of Ras Al Barr. The report suggested that such scenes did not fit the renowned artist status and added that focus should have been made on her singing career and how she achieved big accomplishments among her audience.

The report added that comparison between this film and the series Um Kulthoum that has been successful does not serve the purpose of the film.

A second censors’ committee in addition to the one formed in 2000 to review the film has rejected it for the second time for the same reasons.

During last April the higher censors committee sent a report to the TV Film coordination department giving the green light for screening the film and setting September 20 for airing it by the channel 1 of the Egyptian TV.

Costarring in the film along with Fardous Abdel Hamid are Mahmoud Yasin, Mahmoud Qabil, Ahmed Siam and Nihal Anbar -- Albawaba.com
