A group of female Syrian artists, writers and poets will begin a hunger strike in front of the Arab League headquarters in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Tuesday evening.

Syrian poets Lina El-Tabeeby and Rasha Omran, artist Louise Abdel-Kerim, and activists Salma Gazayerly and Rola El-Kheshn will take part in the hunger strike, according to the Al-Ahram Arabic news website

The strike aims to put pressure on the Arab League to provide more support for the Syrian revolutionaries and to pressure the Assad regime to halt human rights abuses.

Similar initiatives are being carried out by Syrians living in other countries, El-Tabeeby added.
