International human rights lawyer Amal Clooney and her husband George are expecting twins later this year, a source close to Amal's family in Beirut told The Daily Star.

The couple has been preparing for the birth of their twins, which are due in March, the source said.

The Lebanese-born British lawyer, whose maiden name is Alamuddin, celebrated her second wedding anniversary to Hollywood actor George Clooney in September.

The couple dismissed speculation about Amal's pregnancy in August, and the two were in the spotlight again in December when media reported that they were splitting over George’s determination on not having children.

George had reportedly said that kids weren’t on his list of priorities in 2015, but he later said that “he and Amal did want to have children but that they were taking their time and enjoying their time together before taking that step.”

Amal Clooney has taken on a number of high-profile international cases, including the defense of Yazidi women who have been victims of sexual slavery and genocide at the hands of Daesh militants in Iraq.

According to the United Nations, the militants enslaved about 7,000 women and girls in 2014, mainly Yazidis whose faith blends elements of Christianity, Zoroastrianism and Islam, and is still holding some as sex slaves.

She also represented Egyptian-Canadian journalist Mohammed Fahmy, who spent more than a year imprisoned in Egypt before he and a fellow reporter from Al-Jazeera English received presidential pardons. She was also part of a legal team seeking recognition of the 1915 Armenian genocide.
