Omani movie Popcorn has been selected for the Sofia MENAR (Middle East and North Africa Region) Film Festival in Bulgaria. The film festival, which will be held in January 2014, aims to promote movies of the Middle East and Africa region in Europe.
Popcorn is the first movie from Oman selected for the festival, and its director Maitham al Musawi is on cloud nine after hearing the news.
He said, “This is a very good news for me and my team. This is the first film from the sultanate to be screened at the festival, and we are extremely happy. The film shows the transition of a man from childhood to old age and uses several allegories.”
Popcorn, a short film, has already received accolades at different film festivals in the region. The movie was shot in Darsait, and the film’s editing was done by Musawi himself.
“This is my second film and my personal favourite. But sadly, very few from Oman liked it because it has few dialogues and doesn’t have a linear story line. I was influenced to make the film as I have attended different festivals around the region and have seen how symbols can be used to covey a deeper meaning. I was inspired to do the same,” Musawi said.
