ALBAWABA - Some people really believe that Canadian singer Avril Lavigne had a body double named Melissa Vandella in 2003 after she died, which is part of the most outlandish conspiracy theory about her.
When Avril's 2002 singles "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi" reached number one on the charts, she was just 17 years old.
The hypothesis contends, however, that Avril committed suicide soon after the release of Let Go, her first album, because she was unable to deal with the pressures of her newfound fame and the loss of her grandpa.
The conspiracists claim that they recruited a woman named Melissa Vandella to pose as a celebrity for the benefit of the paparazzi and Avril's increasing seclusion. They allegedly trained "Melissa" to sing and perform like the star just before Avril's supposed death.
So that they could keep making money off of Avril's rising stardom, Avril's record company allegedly covered up her death and replaced her entirely with Melissa.
The Brazilian blog Avril Está Morta (meaning "Avril Is Dead") was instrumental in bringing this notion to light in 2011, but it has been around since 2005.
Strangely, the blog post's very first sentence admits it's all a hoax, stating: "We created this blog to demonstrate how conspiracy theories can appear genuine." However, the subsequent dismantling of evidence led readers to believe that Avril had passed away a few years ago.
The relevant evidence emphasizes minor alterations to Avril's look after 2003 and also brings attention to a shot in which Avril had the name "Melissa" scrawled on her palm.
There are also rumors that the singer's 2004 album Under My Skin has hidden meanings, such as the fact that the character "Melissa" admits she isn't really Avril.
Even though Avril has consistently batted down the conspiracy theory on social media, it has returned on a regular basis since 2011, with viral threads adding fuel to the idea.
“No, I’m not dead; I’m here” was Avril's response to a fan's question about her whereabouts during a 2017 Facebook livestream. People are just looking for anything to talk about because they are bored.
"Some people think that I'm not the real me, which is so weird!" The following year, Avril explained the concept in an interview with the Australian radio program Kyle and Jackie O. I mean, why on earth would people believe that?
Additionally, in 2019, the celebrity expressed her shock and dismay to Entertainment Weekly at the fact that some individuals believed the "dumb internet rumor."
