We’re sad to report that director Youcef Bouchouchi has passed away.
The Algerian filmmaker passed away Saturday after an undisclosed illness. He was 77.
Bouchouchi was born November 25th, 1939. He began working at the RTA (Algerian Radio-Television) a year before the Algerian National Liberation of 1962, developing an interest in writing and cinematography.
His first work, a short film entitled The Highest Places of the Revolution, debuted in 1963; he followed those-up with works like The Migration of Prophet Mohammed and Salim and Salima.
Bouchouchi also produced a popular TV show, From the Wonders of the Seventh Art (a reference to cinema), which concluded after a seven year run in 1973.
His last effort was 2007’s The Price of Freedom.
For his efforts, Youcef Bouchouchi was awarded by Algeria for his contribution to the arts in 2003.
