Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was known as the ‘Iron Lady’ of politics, once declaring that she is “not for turning.” She was aggressive, divisive, and had a powerful personality.
Now fans of the UAE singer Ahlam have somewhat curiously chosen the right-wing heart throb from the 1980s as the personality to compare the singer with, in a positive way, of course. No privatisation and mass-redundancies here!
Fans of Ahlam like the Emirati star's ability to defend herself and brush off the frequent attacks she receives through micro-blogging website Twitter.
One enthusiast tweeted, “This woman is the most honest person on Twitter, for Margaret Thatcher in all her glory could not survive half the attacks Ahlam is faced with and if she did face them she would surely collapse.”
Many of Ahlam’s fans agreed with the upset Ahlam-addict, saying that the Emirati deserves praise for her good nature and ability to, in the style of the British lady despised by so many on the left, not to turn, even if she is turning the other cheek and answering her critics directly.
One wonders how Margaret Thatcher, once called a “milk snatcher” after deciding children no longer required state-funded milk in school, a rhyme that exists in playgrounds across the country to this day, would deal with an onslaught via Twitter.
If Ahlam's tough online persona is anything to go by, she would give as good as she gets.
Tell us what you think! Is Ahlam like Margaret Thatcher? Who would be better at defending themselves in a Twitter-fight? Let us know!
