An Egyptian court has sentenced prominent Egyptian comedian actor Adel Imam to a three month jail sentence and a fine of one thousand Egyptian pounds for insulting the Islamic religion in his works and making a mockery out of the traditional Muslim dress for women and beard for men.

A lawsuit was filed by Isran Mansour who claimed that Adel made a mockery out of the Muslim religion in a number of his plays and films. Isran said that Adel intentionally made fun of the religion in his popular play “Al Zaeem” (the Leader) and the film “Murjan Ahmad Murjan” along with other films. He added that the actor ridiculed the teachings and beliefs of Islam in order to make people laugh.

It is noted that Adel was not present at the hearing in which the judge made his ruling.

On a different note, Adel is currently filming the final scenes of his first television drama “Firqit Naji Attalah” and is scheduled to be finished in March.

The drama stars Adel, Anushka, Ahmad Al Saedani, Ahmad Abd Al Warith, and Amro Ramzi. The script is written by Yousif Maati and direction is by Adel’s son Rami Imam.
