ALBAWABA - The holidays are just around the corner, and many struggle to cope with the festivities and everything that comes with it.

While holidays can bring happiness, cheerful vibes, and a sense of togetherness for many, others might feel a wave of depression, stress, and overwhelmingness. In fact, it is reported that in 2021, three in five Americans complained that their mental health suffered during the holidays. It is clear that symptoms can worsen for those with a mental illness, whereas others might feel a great deal of stress due to social obligations and financial issues.

At times, when everyone expects us to be happy and grateful, expressing our emotions and struggles can be challenging. However, even if it is the holidays, or any other time of the year, it is instrumental to learn how to prioritize our mental well-being and clearly communicate our needs.

Here are 6 tips that can help you prioritize your mental health during the holiday season:

1. Accept your feelings
We all experience a range of emotions and sometimes understanding them may be difficult, especially if these emotions contradict one another. But in stressful times, all we need to do is accept our feelings for what they are and try to navigate them. It is also pivotal that you do not feel any shame or guilt for feeling a certain way during the holidays.  Accepting and acknowledging your feelings without judgment can help you better understand them and cope.

2. Communicate your boundaries
Most of us have family members or friends who are generous and tend to overstep at times. It's at times like these that we need to step up and clearly communicate our boundaries. Setting boundaries also includes learning how to say "NO" to things that might trigger you or leave you feeling overwhelmed.

3. Stick to your healthy habits
When holidays and vacations come around, it is very easy for many of us to let go of our routine and healthy habits. But sticking to these habits can actually make us feel grounded and able to cope with the holidays.

Whether your healthy habits include working out, journaling, meditating, or sticking to a healthy diet, make sure you do not turn your back on what has been working for you.

4. Practice self care
Similarly to keeping your healthy habits and routine in check, it is also pivotal that you try to practice some self care. That might look like taking time for yourself away from everyone, taking on a new hobby like yoga, or just listening to what your mind and body are telling you.

5. Limit your time on social media
Spending too much time on social media can have a negative impact on our well-being in general, let alone when we are already feeling down around the holidays. Seeing stories and posts of people enjoying the holidays can make you feel like there is something wrong with you. That is why disconnecting from social media can help you focus on yourself and avoid any triggers.

6. Ask for help
As someone who always saw asking for help as a sign of weakness, I can confidently tell you that asking for the support of others is imperative to navigating difficult times. I am not saying that you cannot get through life without people, but you shouldn’t have to.

Therefore, make sure you always turn to those closest to you and ask for their support. And if you think you might need the help of a professional do not feel any kind of shame. Asking for help, whether from a professional, a friend, or a family member is imperative.

This time of the year can be triggering for many, and it is key that we learn how to be kind to ourselves and those around you. So this holiday, make sure you do not lose yourself trying to make others happy. Instead, work on prioritizing your well-being and taking care of yourself.
