A two-year-old Moroccan child has died after being raped by her uncle, according to Moroccan TV service, Monde 2M.
The assailant reportedly entered the toddler's bedroom and forcibly raped her, resulting in internal injuries so severe she died immediately. The man admitted to the crime upon being arrested on the same day.
The Moroccan man reportedly carried out the act in a shocking revenge plot against his sister's having the child out of wedlock.
“The first elements of the investigation revealed that the girl was raped before her murder,” said Najat Anwar, the president of the organization “Touche pas à mon enfant”, (Don't touch my child) who is following the case.
The organization is Moroccan-based non-profit aimed at combating all forms of child abuse in the north African country.
It was only earlier this year that the Moroccan government voted to amend a law in the country's penal code on statutory rape which allowed assailants to dodge convictions by marrying their underage victims. Since the amendment, rights groups argue massive reforms are still needed to protect victims.
