A nightclub party to celebrate the birth of a baby turned bitter as two of the party-goers landed behind bars for indulging in a group fight.
Despite the fact that the party was thrown to celebrate the birth of a child to a 36-year-old Palestinian engineer, the latter ended up facing six months in jail for throwing a glass at an American teacher, which hit his eye.
Meanwhile, a 27-year-old Egyptian security supervisor was also jailed for six months for beating one of the engineer’s cousins.
Prosecution records said 36-year-old W.A. went with his three cousins — all brothers — to celebrate the birth of his baby at a nightclub at Dubai Marina on September 21, 2012.
W.A. engaged in a brawl with the American teacher before he threw a glass in her eye and caused 35 per cent permanent disability.
Medical reports confirmed the teacher was partly blinded.
Records said when the fight erupted between a number of unidentified persons and the group of relatives [W.A. and the brothers], the security supervisor, E.Y., tried to stop the fight, during which he punched and kicked one of the Palestinian brothers, K.S.
The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced W.A. to six months in jail for assaulting the teacher, P.J., and causing her a permanent disability.
Presiding judge Wajdi Al Menyawi also sentenced E.Y. to six months in jail for punching and kicking K.S. and causing him a five per cent permanent disability in his jaw.
The defendants pleaded not guilty and cited self-defence.
K.S. said he went with his two brothers and their cousin, W.A., to celebrate the birth of his nephew when the incident happened.
“W.A. went to get a drink. A woman [P.J.] took W.A.’s seat. I felt embarrassed to tell her that the seat was occupied. My brother came and told me that it was time to leave… I told him that I would wait for W.A. When my cousin arrived, he got mad when he saw that his seat was taken. I told him that my brothers were waiting outside and that we should leave. When I turned my back and walked away, I heard a loud noise and a cry. I turned around and spotted the woman putting her hand to her eye which was bleeding profusely.”
A group of clubbers gathered around. Then I spotted E.Y. beating my cousin. I called my brothers,” K.S. stated.
Records said the supervisor and the brothers got involved in a fight when they tried to help their cousin.
The engineer said P.J. kicked him on his leg and beat him on his back before he fought with her.
Records said P.J. and one of the brothers were fined by the Dubai Misdemeanour Court for assault.
