Abu Dhabi Police said yesterday that the Arab woman was caught after her Toyota Land Cruiser was detected speeding by several radars and cameras in Abu Dhabi’s Western Region.
Colonel Hamad Nasser Al Balushi, director of traffic in Abu Dhabi’s outer regions, said: “The motorist was discovered after officers checked through records and pictures of offenders that had been taken by speed cameras.”
A woman driver in Abu Dhabi has been arrested after she clocked up 580 traffic violations, which amounted to Dhs459,000 in fines.
He said the electronic system showed the 4x4 had committed 580 traffic violations, mostly for speeding. Traffic authorities said they also discovered the woman had forged the number plate on her vehicle and was not using the officially registered plate.
“She did this so she could avoid fines being written in her name,” said the officer. Police said they have referred the woman to public prosecution.
Police have warned people to fully comply with traffic rules. Such crimes can lead to a two-year-jail sentence or Dhs20,000 fine if convicted.
According to Al Balushi, Abu Dhabi Traffic Police have increased their patrols and have also started using helicopters fitted with infrared video cameras to help them catch reckless drivers.
