A bloody two days in Syria has left at least 88 rebels and Syrian Army personnel dead in a battle for control of the country’s southern Daraa province, AFP reports.

British based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said clashes between rebels and the Syrian regime that began on Thursday led to the high death toll.

It is believed that rebels forces along with the hard line extremist group al-Nusra Front, seized Tal al-Jabiyeh hill, AFP reports.

As rebels continued to advance on another hilltop, Assad’s regime forces retaliated with heavy artillery fire and helicopters in a bid to push them back.

Syria’s conflict continues to worsen as more than 150,000 people have been killed, with many internally displaced.
