One Lebanese man was wounded and two others kidnapped in clashes between residents of the east Lebanon border village of Arsal and Syrian armed rebels, a security source told The Daily Star Sunday.

The clashes - the first of their kind- took place in the mountainous region of Rahwa, which separates Arsal from Syrian territories, the source explained.

The source said that one man was wounded in the clashes and two others were kidnapped by the Syrian opposition. The source added that Arsal officials contacted Syrian opposition groups in the area to secure the release of the two kidnapped men.

The reasons behind the clashes were not immediately known, according to the source .

The Bekaa Valley town of Arsal in the Baalbek region is known for its strong support for Syrian rebels. The town houses thousands of Syrian families who too refuge there fleeing the battles in their country.
