Zuckerberg says smart glasses will take over soon
Last week, Meta, formerly named Facebook, the American multinational technology conglomerate, announced the launch of its new Orion augmented reality (AR) glasses. Orion, is Meta's most advanced augmented reality (AR) glasses, as Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated at the company's annual Connect 2024 conference.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta said: “This is the physical world with holograms overlaid on it. For now, I think the right way to look at Orion is as a time machine, these glasses exist, they are awesome and they are a glimpse of a future that I think is going to be pretty exciting.”
Additionally, the new glasses will enable users to have diverse digital experiences and provide a large 3D visual display. Made of magnesium alloy and powered by custom silicon designed by Meta, the lightweight glasses are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, allowing people to see each other’s faces, eyes, and expressions clearly.
Meta stated that its new smart glasses feature advanced technology and holographic displays that deliver great AR experiences. The new Orion glasses will support voice commands, eye, and hand tracking, and provide a wristband for swiping, clicking, and scrolling.
Zuckerberg believes that smart glasses will reduce human errors, enhance data visualization, and track users’ health. However, the company faces significant challenges such as comfort, compatibility with other glasses, battery life, and data security. These challenges must be addressed for smart glasses to successfully replace smartphones by 2023 as anticipated by Zuckerberg and Meta.
