For employers, a resignation can be devastating especially when it comes from their best employees. However, as hard as it may be, most companies will face it at some point.

According to Bayt.com's "Employee retention in the MENA workplace" poll, February 2013, one of the main driving forces behind leaving jobs is fear of being fired, stated by 44.7 percent of the respondents. Not being paid enough is also a motivator for resigning, with 45.2 percent of respondents indicating this insecurity as their primary reason for changing jobs. Only 10.1 percent stated that they left their last job due to a lack of motivation, not getting along with the upper management or the team, among other reasons.

Wondering about the reasons why employees quit their jobs, Mohd Asif Ansari asks on Bayt.com Specialties, in the Human Resources specialty: “Why do you think good employees leave the workplace?” As an answer, Abdul RehmanZaheer believes that the reasons behind high employee turnover arelack of promotion avenues, poor increment plans, lack of job appraisals, poor health plans/insurance, and poor workplace policies and ethics.

PadmakumarPathiyil adds: “It can be personal reasons, no growth or development opportunities, a low salary increase, no recognition from higher management, micro-management, high work pressure, better opportunities or better salaries at other companies.” HossamAzzam also explains: “In my point of view, there are many reasons for employee turnover, such as searching for better job opportunities, low salaries, mismanagement or ill-treatment or the work doesn’t correspond to the aspirations and desires of the employee.”

A high turnover in companies is financially pricy as the management needs to spend time, money, and efforts in order to fill the position and train the new employee. Not to mention that high turnover can affect the employee morale and cause many of them to leave as well. It can also put the remaining employees under more pressure because they have to fill in the gaps until a new employee is hired and trained.
