You may be already used to seeing millennials quickly redefining the contemporary workplace. But have you ever tried to stop guessing and really understand the “millennial perspective”? We put together a list of the top 8 things today’s most influential innovators want, on the basis of their peculiar traits, needs and expectations. Because if it seems very hard to attract millennials to a workplace – and even more difficult to keep them – you’d better know what’s really going on with them if you want your business to survive and grow.

1. Everything digital

Whether in Dubai or Riyadh or Cairo, Middle Eastern Millennials were raised on technology. To appeal to this generation of “digital natives”, promoting a vibrant technology ecosystem that includes instant messaging, social networking, video on demand etc. to instantly connect and engage is key. As Arab youngsters use consistently WhatsApp and Facebook, try to encourage a business-focused use of social media, and don’t forget to couple the effort with ad hoc workshops to avoid intergenerational conflicts and communication breakdowns. Embrace the digital revolution in all its aspects, inciting applicants to send out video resumes and leverage recruitment platforms like Bayt.com.

2. Feedback, feedback and feedback again

Millennial generation wants and values constructive feedback. Unlike the past where employees received  annual reviews, they want to keep track of their work regularly, day by day. Be honest and punctual in giving your comments, and don’t forget to highlight both their positive contributions to the overall organization’s performance and their individual improvement of key competencies.

3. Life beyond work

According to a recent Bayt.com survey, millennials in MENA favor good work/life balance over financial reward. Although Arab millennials are aware of their professional potential and regard a fair compensation as their full right, they attach greater importance to having flexible working hours and remote work options. They believe office attendance is not necessary on a regular basis, and claim to be as productive on their couches as they are at their desks.

4. Community-minded environment

Just because millennials rave about everything technology, it doesn’t mean they don’t place value on the office environment itself. Indeed, the physical environment can play a crucial role in promoting well-being, as long as it’s an open space that facilitates interactions, fosters collaboration and nurtures a natural sense of community. Creating environments that are collaborative and inclusive is essential to the overall happiness of the company, because it’s here where all employees – young and old – can thrive.
