The US Army Engineering and Support Center has contracted Parsons to support its mission for dismantling captured enemy ammunition in Iraq. The initial period of performance is for one year with a contract value of $89 million.
Parsons was selected for this contract based on its 20-plus-year history of strong project performance for the Huntsville Corps of Engineers. The company was one of four contractors selected to support the Engineering and Support Center's worldwide mission for ordnance and explosive cleanup.
Parsons will perform engineering, management, contract administration, and logistics support to three ordnance contractors at various sites located in Iraq. Parsons will establish and maintain a program liaison office in Baghdad, Iraq, and a rear support office in the United States.
Parsons will also deploy personnel to each ordnance-processing site for the duration of the project. The company will have no direct role in the movement or detonation of the ammunition.
Under the terms of the four separate task orders, the businesses will collect captured enemy munitions from US military personnel, determine whether the munitions are serviceable or unserviceable, and destroy selected munitions. The remainder will be stockpiled under US control until further disposition is determined.
"These contracts will have three main purposes," said Huntsville Center Ordnance and Explosives Directorate, Glenn Earhart. "First, we will replace Department of Defense active military with Corps of Engineers contractors and employees so that the soldiers can return to their normal military duties. Second, so we can eventually return as much of these functions as possible to the people of Iraq providing them with additional job opportunities. Third, this mission will make Iraq safer for everyone by getting rid of ammunition scattered throughout the country."
