ALBAWABA - Heavy rains and thunderstorms battered the United Arab Emirates today, causing many airlines to cancel numerous international flights only two weeks after the city of Dubai was struck by historical storm and floods which claimed four lives.

The severe weather conditions hampered planned flights operated by UAE airlines Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai, and Air Arabia, causing delays, postponements, and diversions.

"Customers arriving or departing from Dubai airport on 2 May can expect some delays as flights are rescheduled," Emirates airlines said in a statement, according to Gulf News, noting that rebooking fees will not be charged, with the following Emirates flights being cancelled so far:

EK 123/124 - between Dubai and Istanbul, EK 763/764 - between Dubai and Johannesburg, EK 719/720 - between Dubai and Nairobi, Ek 921/922 - between Dubai and Cairo, EK 903/904 - between Dubai and Amman, and EK 352/353 - between Dubai and Singapore.

Locals were warned as the unpredictable weather reached its height. According to Times of India, both public and commercial sectors were required to remain inside and implement remote work policies, with educational institutions moving to distant learning to protect student safety. Public recreational sites, including parks and beaches, were temporarily closed to avoid mishaps during severe weather.

"Avoid driving unless absolutely necessary,” The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) advised residents, adding that “if necessary, drive with caution and remain vigilant and alert to ensure the safety of all road users,” while motorists were advised to use low-beam headlights to improve visibility amid the heavy rain.
