Turkish authorities are currently exploring the possibility of selling electricity to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), to be transferred via underwater cable. The first phase of the study will rate the feasibility of laying 70 miles of cable between Anamur and Girne in the TRNC along the Turkish coastline, reported Star.
Although the island of Cyprus has been split since Turkish troops invaded its northern third in 1974, necessity forces the Greek and Turkish Cypriots to share certain resources. In the past, the Greek Cypriots provided TRNC’s electricity free of charge and water pipes still cross the island.
The sides also worked together on a sewage-treatment plant for Nicosia. Turkish Cypriots no longer rely on the south for electricity, as the republic now houses a huge power plant constructed with Turkey’s help. — (menareport.com)
