A total of 11.17 million tourists visited Turkey between January and November 2001, up 11.7 percent from the 10 million visitors who arrived during the same period last year. During the month of November 2001 alone, 521,024 tourists visited Turkey. Germans accounted for 25 percent of Turkey‘s incoming tourism in the first 11 months of 2001, British tourists for 7.5 percent and Russian tourists for 6.6 percent of total arrivals.
Tourism revenues increased by 13 percent to $6.65 billion in the first nine months period, up from $5.88 billion during the same period in 2000, reported the Anatolia news agency. Tourism revenues are expected to increase up to nine billion dollars by the end of the current year, Turkish tourism ministry officials anticipated.
A total of 7.6 million tourists arrived in Turkey from the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) between January-November 2001, 17.6 percent more than during the same period in 2000. Some 2.37 million tourists came to Turkey from East European countries, rising four percent over the first 11 months of the year 2000.
The original 20 members of the OECD are located in Western countries of Europe and North America. Later on, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Finland joined the organization and even more recently, Mexico, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Korea and the Slovak Republic have become members. — (menareport.com)
