Following the successful launch of its second satellite into geosynchronous orbit on June 10, 2003, Thuraya has completed the transition stages needed to divert all its traffic to the newly launched satellite, known as Thuraya 2.
With this transfer, Thuraya has completed a critical step towards guaranteeing uninterrupted service to its wide subscriber base. The Thuraya 1 is currently "parked in orbit", both as back-up and in preparation for whatever further expansion options Thuraya chooses to exercise in the future. — (menareport.com)
