Saudi Aramco announced Saturday developing a new technology to improve the performance of vehicle engines to achieve two goals.

The first goal is to reduce fuel consumption, and the second goal is to reduce emissions that cause environmental pollution.

“Substantial proportion of our petroleum products is used as fuel for vehicles,” Aramco said in a statement.

“Therefore, the company's research and development network is working on developing advanced combustion methods, creating more efficient new fuel and introducing hybridization solutions,” the statement explained.

It added that using more volatile fuels, such as gasoline, reduces emissions significantly, pointing out that the combustion process by pressure is the correct technology, but it is used with the wrong type of fuel, the diesel.

This means that only the type of fuel must be changed, hence consumption will be reduced along with carbon dioxide emissions by between 25 and 30 percent, according to the statement.

It noted that it will work on dealing with the post-combustion emissions using carbon capture and conversion techniques.

Aramco’s efforts in innovation and development are non-stop.

In April, Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih stressed the importance of developing innovative capacity as a key factor in enabling the Kingdom to build its upcoming economic future on firm bases in the public and private sectors.

Speaking at the Financial Sector Conference in Riyadh, Falih said fostering innovation requires finding different financing models for companies while giving the financial sector broader roles, allowing its players to innovate and advance.

He discussed the technical projects run by Aramco in cooperation with many national institutions, such as King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology and Badir Technology Incubators and Accelerators Program.

“Aramco and SABIC have been contributing to bolstering the Kingdom's experience in being introduced to global markets,” he said.

“The two companies view the world as an open market for their products, which was reflected in reaching the Chinese and US markets.”

He explained that Aramco seeks, in this context, to enhance its investment experience in the gas sector, particularly in emerging markets in Asia, for instance.
