According to Al-Jazira newspaper (June 12, 2005), a recently prepared study by the Saudi Ministry of Commerce and Industry estimated at 85,400 square meters the total area of the operating 13 industrial estates in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The Kingdom has spent until now SR 26 million on developing these territories, which consists of 1,652 factories, which is equivalent to 45.7% of the total factories in Saudi Arabia. The number of the licensed manufacturing factories amounted to 3,657 factories by the end of the first quarter of 2004, a 1.1% rise compared with the same period in the previous year.
