Saudi Arabia launched an appeal on Saturday October 13 for donations for humanitarian aid to "ease the suffering" of Afghan refugees, the official Saudi news agency SPA reported.

Interior Minister Prince Nayef Bin Abdel Aziz urged "all citizens and expatriates to respond actively to the royal directive" and to deposit contributions in a special account, adding that the money would go directly to the refugees, SPA said.

Saudi Arabia's King Fahd earlier this month, before the US-led strikes on Afghanistan, pledged $10 million in humanitarian aid to help Afghan refugees. The United Nations has appealed for hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan. — (AFP, Riyadh)
