ALBAWABA – Russia has announced plans to build the first artificial island in the Black Sea by 2026. The island will be located off the coast of Sochi.

Russia has announced plans to begin construction of its first artificial island in the Black Sea by 2026. The project will be carried out by the Corporation Ostrov Pervyy.
Bulat Shakirov, the project's managing director, stated: “From 2026 we plan to start construction of protective hydraulic structures, as it is possible to make the body of the island only when we have protected the water area from water and wind.”

The new artificial island will cover 50 hectares and will feature hotels, tourist and sports areas, walking paths, music and theater venues, residences, and a research center. The total area of the planned developments will span 1.5 million square meters.
The project is set to begin in 2026 and is expected to be completed by 2031, with an estimated investment of over $10 billion (1 trillion rubles) and a payback period of approximately 12 years.
Notably, this project will create more than 10,000 jobs in diverse fields including hospitality, sports, culture, management, and port maintenance. Additionally, the project will add more than $10 million (1 billion rubles) annually to the Russia’s federal and taxes budgets.
