Russia and Algeria discussed further cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear power
The talks took place on March 2 in Algeria within the framework of the first session of the Algerian-Russian Joint Coordinating Committee for cooperation on the peaceful uses of atomic energy, co-chaired by Algerian Commissariat of Atomic Energy (COMENA) head Mohamed Derdour and Director of the International Business Department of Rosatom Nikolay Drozdov.
“The parties discussed the ways of further cooperation on the peaceful uses of atomic energy and devised an action plan for a move on to a new level of cooperation,” the State Corporation reported.
As reported earlier, in October of last year, Rosatom Chief Executive Sergey Kirienko announced that the company was starting consultations on the construction of the NPP in Algeria. According to Kirienko, Algeria plans to put NPP into operation in 2026, and there is plenty of time for selecting a specific project.
Earlier in September 2014, Russia and Algeria signed an agreement concerning the cooperation on the peaceful uses of atomic energy, which allows NPP construction in Algeria.
The Minister of Energy of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria Toucef Yousfi said that the first Algerian NPP may be constructed within the next 12 years.
